+ Facts about barn owls.

  1. Most owls are nocturnal and solitary.
  2. Most owl hunt mammals, insects and birds. However some species hunt fish.
  3. A group of owls is called a parliament.
  4. Owls have forward-facing eyes and a flat face. Having forward-facing eyes enables better depth perception in low light.
  5. Owls are farsighted and cannot see anything very close to their face.
  6. Owl eyes are fixed in their sockets, so they must swivel their heads alot.
  7. Owls can rotate their faces 270 degrees.
  8. Some owls range from 13cm in length to 70cm in length.
  9. Owls can fly silently, very useful for night hunting.

  11. Barn owls are very widespread throughout the world, found everywhere except polar and desert regions.
  12. Barn owls can live up to 20 years in captivity but only usually live 2-4 years in the wild.
  13. Barn owls are often hunted by other owls, possoms, racoons, hawks and cats.
  14. Female barn owls have a more reddish chest and are usually more spotted on the breast than the male.

Names for barn owls include: golden owl, white owl, monkey-faced owl, silver owl, demon owl, ghost owl, death owl, night owl, rat owl, church owl, cave owl, stone owl, hissing owl, hobgoblin or hobby owl, dobby owl, golden owl, scritch owl, screech owl, straw owl, barnyard owl and delicate owl.
  16. Female barn owls lay about 5 to 7 white, spotless eggs during one cycle, and it takes from 32 to 34 days for the first egg to hatch.
  17. Barn owl babies are called 'owlets'.
